BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track & Field finished out the first day of C-USA Indoor Competition at the Birmingham Crossplex. The Blazers conclude the first day sitting in the middle of the pack in scoring, with day two underway tomorrow morning.
"We are very proud of how everyone competed today. We challenged the team to leave the meet with either a season best or personal best. We almost completely accomplished that minus two performances." said head coach Kurt Thomas. "We had plenty of highlights, like Megan getting a big fourth place as a freshman and a huge PR. Lauren Charlton getting another big 5 points and 4th place finish was fun to watch and of course, a very good DMR getting fifth place."
The Blazers began the day with the Pentathlon, where Laney Kronz and Megan Hamilton-Strong started out with a solid performance in the 60m hurdles and 800m. Both Kronz and Hamilton Strong finished top five in these events.
Lauren Charlton built off her first-time indoor performance with a fourth-place PR performance in the Women's 5K. Charlton finished the event with a 17:02.79, shaving seconds off her prior record of 17:10.
The final event saw a top-five performance in the distance medley relay, where the Blazers closed out with a time of 12:06.51, another PR for the 2023 season.
At the close of day one, the total number of PRs sits at ten, including PRs in the 60m, 400m, 800m, Mile, DMR and weight throw.
QUOTES FROM KURT THOMAS
"On day two, we have more chances at points with Kat qualifying in the hurdles, and high jump, triple jump and shot put going tomorrow. Not to mention the 3K and 4x4. We need to keep the same competitive spirit going through tomorrow."
