BIRMINGHAM - The 2023 season celebrated the 5th anniversary of the Most Valuable Protector (MVP) program, brought to you by Protective Life Corporation (Protective). Through this partnership, Protective showcased eight outstanding nonprofit organizations at each of UAB's six home games at Protective Stadium. The MVPs received pre-game hospitality, on-field recognition, and a donation from the Protective Life Foundation.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Birmingham
To kick off football season, Protective's Shayla Aguillard was joined by Habitat for Humanity's Drew Bonner and Charles Moore as Habitat for Humanity was recognized as the first MVP of the season. Together, Protecting Good and Habitat provided roof replacements and home repairs at no cost to community members living in Northside near Protective Stadium to protect their homes against storm and wind damage. Over 120 homes have been part of the neighborhood revitalization program.
Smile-A-Mile
In support of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Protective's Lori Dixon partnered with Bruce Hooper, Smile-A-Mile CEO, to honor Smile-A-Mile on Sept. 16. The 35-year-old organization supports Alabamians affected by childhood cancer and provides them with meaningful and educational programs including Camp Smile-A-Mile, a year-round program that supports families through diagnosis and treatment.
Children's Harbor
In celebration of Family Weekend, Protective's Wendy Evesque stood alongside Cat Outzen, Children's Harbor CEO, to showcase the efforts of Children's Harbor. Children's Harbor, which offers no-cost services at two campuses located at Lake Martin and Children's of Alabama, supports families impacted by childhood cancer by providing refuge, respite and resources.
Blazer Kitchen
Scott Adams of Protective recognized Steve Murray and Lisa Higginbotham of UAB's Blazer Kitchen on Oct. 21. Blazer Kitchen works to address the issue of food insecurity in the UAB community and has provided nearly 145,000 meals to UAB employees, students and community members dealing with food insecurity.
Birmingham Talks, Childcare Resources and Bundles of Hope
To mark the special occasion of UAB's Homecoming, Protective's Theresa Jones recognized not one, but three outstanding community organizations: Birmingham Talks, Childcare Resources, and Bundles of Hope. These organizations are crucial to our community and provide individuals and families with children the assistance and resources they need.
Executive Director Ruth Moss oversees efforts of Birmingham Talks. This organization offers a free citywide program that supports babies from birth until three years old by providing resources to support childhood literacy.
Childcare Resources, represented by Joan Wright, strives to make quality care and education accessible for children. By supplying financial assistance for low-to-moderate income families and research-driven parent education resources to hundreds of families in search of childcare options. Protective is grateful for the efforts of Childcare Resources.
Represented by Lindsay Gray, Bundles of Hope provides the community with basic, essential and daily necessities for young families in Alabama. Bundles of Hope provides diapers to families experiencing financial hardship by providing diapers at no cost.
Lakeshore Foundation
For the Salute to Service game on Nov. 18, Protective honored Lakeshore Foundation for the last game of the season. Lakeshore Foundation's mission is to grant opportunities to individuals with disabilities so they can lead healthy lifestyles. By offering physical activity opportunities, research and advocacy, Lakeshore Foundation promotes healthy living for all. Protective's Sam Basu joined W.D. Foster, retired Birmingham Police Captain and Army Major Veteran, on-field for the last game of the season.
