BIRMINGHAM – UAB Track and Field announced their 2023-24 season schedule, opening their first year in the American Athletic Conference.
"We are excited for our indoor and outdoor seasons. Our schedules reflect our ability to compete against great competition and develop good competition habits." said head coach Kurt Thomas on the season preview.
This season, UAB enters the year with new talent to the roster, new staff, and a diverse schedule for the indoor and outdoor seasons. With assistant coaches Travis Pope and Kayla Woulard joining the ranks for the Blazers, UAB gears up for a new era transcending the conference transition.
INDOOR SEASON
The Blazers open up the indoor season at the Birmingham Crossplex, competing in the BSC Icebreaker on December 1 before going on holiday break. Returning in January, the Green and Gold will host the Blazer and Vulcan Invite on January 12. They follow up with one last regular season meet at the Crossplex before traveling east to Clemson to compete in the Bob Pollock Meet.
After a showing at Norman Track, the Blazers travel to Nashville, Tenn., competing in the Indoor Music City Challenge hosted by Vanderbilt. Concluding the indoor season, UAB will return to their home away from home to host the AAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Crossplex on Feb. 23-24.
OUTDOOR SEASON
UAB kicks off the outdoor season with a visit to Atlanta, where the Green and Gold debuts at the Georgia Tech Invite before traveling to Starkville for the Bulldog Relays. After completing stops in the south, the Blazers travel to the City of Oaks, Raleigh, for the Raleigh Relays.
The Blazers return home to host the UAB Spring Invite at the end of March before a quick trip to Tuscaloosa for the Crimson Classic, hosted by Alabama. Following the Crimson Classic, UAB travels to three more SEC meets: the Joe Walker Invite (Ole Miss), Tiger Track Classic (Auburn), and Outdoor Music City Challenge (Vanderbilt), before competing in the AAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
QUOTE FROM KURT THOMAS
"Indoors, we have the privilege of competing at home at the crossplex multiple times, but also challenge ourselves at Clemson and Vanderbilt against bigger competition. For outdoor, it is the same. Some regular meets we've competed at for years, like Mississippi State, Alabama, and Auburn, and some newer meets at Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt outdoors. All of these are in preparation for our indoor and outdoor championship meets. We have a fun and talented team, and it will be great to see them compete at their best this year."
