Observations From Week One of UAB Football Fall Camp

BIRMINGHAM – Week one of UAB's fall camp is officially in the books as the Blazers prepare to open the season on Sept. 1 against Alabama A&M at Protective Stadium.
OBSERVATIONS:
OBSERVATIONS:
- UAB held its sixth practice on Saturday morning and its first in full pads. The Blazers were in helmets for the first two days of camp and shells for the following three until today's full-padded practice.
- The defensive depth has been on full display this week. UAB returns nine starters or co-starters to a unit that finished 16th nationally in total defense, and have added some key transfers who are making an immediate impact. Specifically at linebacker, Reynard Ellis (Georgia Southern), Jackson Bratton (Alabama) and Reise Collier (Coffeyville) have joined Noah Wilder and Tyler Taylor to form one of the strongest linebacking corps UAB has ever had.
- The safeties and corners have also been performing at a high level with multiple players rotating in and out at every position. Along with the names who have extensive playing experience, redshirt sophomore Colby Dempsey at corner has also proven he is a viable option as he competes for more playing time in 2022.
- Running backs DeWayne McBride and Jermaine Brown Jr. are established, but a third option has emerged in Alabama transfer A.J. Gates. Gates has had some tremendous runs throughout the first week of camp and the coaching staff is expecting him to contribute this season in his second year at UAB.
- The Blazers are having fun. Coach Vincent has been ending practices with activates to keep the team engaged, like having linemen catch punts, or Matt Quinn kicking a game-winning field goal with the entire team surrounding and distracting him. The Blazers have championship aspirations but are not losing sight of having fun playing the game as well.
