BIRMINGHAM – The UAB rifle team placed three student-athletes on the SoCon's 2021-22 Academic All-Conference Team and six on the SoCon Honor Roll, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Jordan Blankenship (3.99 GPA), Maggie Vonderau (3.82 GPA) and Blake Wingard (3.93 GPA) each earned spots on the Academic All-Conference Team. Vonderau and Blankenship have now earned the honors in back-to-back years.
Blakenship, Maggie Vonderau, Wingard, Claire Vonderau, Taylor Jones and Gracie Turk each earned spots on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams' competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
The 637 total spring Academic All-Conference Team selections are second only to the 742 from the spring of 2020, when participation requirements were relaxed and some schools instituted measures of academic relief due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
With league competition in 2020-21 occurring mostly in the second semester, the league named just one team for that academic year instead of naming fall and spring squads as usual.
The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
The 2,428 total Academic Honor Roll selections are the third-most in league history (behind 2019-20 and 2020-21).
