BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team opens the 2022 Conference USA Tournament on Thursday morning against Coastal Carolina in first round action at John Hunt Park Sports Complex in Huntsville. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
The Blazers (15-16, 3-4 C-USA) earned the No. 4 overall seed after setting a single season school record with 15 wins. The Chanticleers enter the contest at 18-14 overall and the winner will advance to take on top-seeded Florida Atlantic on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. The tournament is a double-elimination format.
This is the inaugural Conference USA Tournament, and the champion will earn an automatic berth into the expanded 16-team NCAA National Championship field. Next weekend, May 4-8, is the sixth NCAA National Championship in Gulf Shores, Ala., and UAB as served as the tournament host for all of them.
UAB has had a record-breaking season both as a team and individually. On Court 1, Rachel Tam and Adriana Pereira have played to an overall record of 18-12 and have competed on Court 1 together every match this season. The 18 wins are the most as a duo for a single season in school history, while Tam adds to her career Court 1 wins record with every victory she tallies. Tam is 32-25 overall on Court 1 in her career.
Ella Alexander and Jessica Ennis have anchored the back of UAB's line up the entire season and have a record of 15-8 together, including a mark of 10-1 on Court 5. Alexander is 20-11 overall, and her 20 wins are a single season UAB record as she is the first player in school history to reach the 20-wins plateau.
UAB is 1-2 all-time against Coastal Carolina and most recently dropped a 3-2 decision to the Chants last season at home.
