BIRMINGHAM – Cornerback Darious Williams became the first player in program history to win the Super Bowl on Sunday night, and his journey to lifting the Lombardi Trophy is nothing short of extraordinary.
Williams attended a walk-on tryout at UAB in 2014 and immediately earned a spot on the roster after showing potential in front of first year head coach Bill Clark. Williams then became a key contributor on the 2014 team prior to the program disbanding following that season.
The Jacksonville, Fla., native had opportunities to go play elsewhere following the shutdown, but instead he took a year off and moved back home to Jacksonville. When the program was reinstated, Williams was one of the first players to return and became the face of the program despite only having the 2017 season of eligibility remaining.
Williams ascended into Conference USA's top shutdown corner that season en route to earning Pro Football Focus First Team All-America honors and First Team All-Conference USA recognition in 2017.
Despite having a breakout season, Williams signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2018. The Ravens waived him, and Williams then ventured to Los Angeles and signed with the Rams.
He played in 12 games for the Rams in 2019 and became a full-time starter in 2020 when he had 44 total tackles and four interceptions.
This year, Williams had 71 total tackles and capped his season by leading the Rams with eight tackles in their 23-20 Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Williams' journey to reaching the mountain top of the NFL embodies what UAB Football represents – A relentless drive to succeed with an underdog mentality fueling the fire.
Congratulations Darious!
