BIRMINGHAM - Defense was the storyline of Saturday's Pepsi Spring Game at Legion Field, as the White team defeated the Green team 6-0 in UAB's final contest at the Old Gray Lady.
"Today was all about getting reps for a lot of guys and we accomplished that," head coach Bill Clark said. "We limited the offense and I thought our defense showed what they are capable of. As I was in the locker room today, I was thinking of all the great memories I have had here. The high school games, the great locker room celebrations, the Children's Harbor games. Legion Field has given us some great memories."
The defenses for the Green and White teams racked up nine sacks on the day, as Antonio Moultrie led the squads with three. One sack each was credited to Alex Wright, Kelle Sanders, Justin Thomas, Montaj Cook, Trevon McClain and Jacob Batts.
Colby Dempsey notched an interception with just under four minutes to go in the first quarter, while Michael Fairbanks II forced a fumble that was recovered by Damon Miller.
Offensively, UAB played all five of its quarterbacks, with veteran Tyler Johnston III being the starter with the A-1s. RB Jermaine Brown Jr. was featured as a receiver in the slot on Saturday, while Mississippi State transfer Lee Witherspoon saw his first action in the backfield in front of a crowd at UAB.
DeWayne McBride was the featured back with the A-1s to open the game, while Trea Shropshire and Ryan Davis served as the wideouts with the group.
Kicker Matt Quinn provided all of Saturday's points, as he tallied a 24-yard field goal in the opening period and a 37-yarder in the second quarter.
After a long pass from Johnston III to Shropshire got the White team into the red zone in the first quarter, Quinn connected on a 24-yard field goal for the first points of the game.
In the second quarter, it was all defense until the final minutes when RaJae' Johnson-Sanders got the White team into the red zone with a pass from Bryson Lucero. Quinn later connected on a 37-yard field goal attempt, his second of the day, to make the score 6-0, the eventual final score.
