Blazers Earn Saturday Split in Matches with Old Dominion and Bellarmine

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB men's tennis team earned a split on Saturday, as the Blazers fell to Conference USA foe Old Dominion, 4-0, on Saturday morning before defeating Bellarmine, 6-1, in the afternoon session.
UAB 0, OLD DOMINION 4
In the first match of the day, UAB (3-5, 0-2 C-USA) dropped the doubles point with ODU victories on courts two and three. Luca Maldoner/Nicola Vidal topped Nikola Puric/Parker Bradbary, 6-1, on court two before Francois Le Tallec/Tomislav Podvinski overcame Daniel Janko/Vojtech Podzemny, 6-4.
In singles play, the Monarchs (6-7, 1-0 C-USA) clinched the match with wins on courts three (Vidal def. Puric, 6-1, 6-0), four (Younes Lalami def. Janko, 6-1, 6-1) and six (Pearse Dolan def. Podzemny, 6-3, 6-2).
UAB is now 2-8 all-time against Old Dominion.
UAB 6, BELLARMINE 1
In the first-ever meeting between UAB and Bellarmine, UAB failed to win the doubles point, but notched wins in all six singles positions to take home a win.
Doubles play saw the Knights from Louisville, Ky. Claim wins on courts two and three, while UAB won on court one. Emil Berglund/Eli Franks won on court three to start the match, before UAB evened doubles play with a court one victory by Roman Postolka/Michal Lusovsky over Evan Bottorff/Cole Groetsch, 6-3. Bellarmine won on court three to claim the doubles point as Thanos Spyropolous/Giovani Pasini fell to Paul Reynolds/Ian Deiters, 6-4.
In singles play, UAB started out hot, winning on court six as Bradbary quickly overcame Deiters, 6-4, 6-1 to knot the match score at one. UAB took the lead on court four (Podzemny def. Reynolds, 6-3, 6-1) and never looked back, winning on courts three (Spyropolous def. Bottorff, 6-2, 6-2) and one (Postolka def. Groetsch, 6-2. 7-5) to clinch the match.
The Green and Gold extended its advantage on courts five and two, as Pasini topped Sam Ruff, 6-3, 6-2, and Lusovsky bested Berglund, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
UAB returns to the courts on Thursday as the Blazers play host to North Alabama with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m. at Lakeshore Tennis Center.
