BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's golf team captured the team championship and Tia Teiniketo won the individual title at the UAB Spring Invitational on Tuesday at Greystone Golf and Country Club.
This the first tournament UAB has won this season and the third overall title in the last two years. For Teiniketo, this is her second individual title of the season and third of her career.
"Proud is an understatement," said head coach Ryan Ashburn. "These girls have worked extremely hard this past month and its paid off. Tia is a Rockstar. She's won two tournaments this year and I hope she adds more to it over the next month. Things we have been working on are slowly coming together at the right time and I can't wait to head down to Gulf Shores with this momentum."
Teiniketo (-4) shot consecutive rounds of 70 (-2) and won the tournament by seven strokes over Molly Bebelaar of Middle Tennessee.
As a team, the Blazers (+25) won the tournament by three strokes over Xavier (+28). Middle Tennessee (+32), High Point (+35) and Samford (+43) rounded out the top five.
Freshman Shelly Chen also had a top 10 finish as she tied for 10th overall by shooting 75-77 (+8). Fellow freshman Emilia Smith moved up 22 spots in the second round with a three over 75 and finished the tournament in a tie for 19th.
Senior Stephenie Fowler (76-81, +13) tied for 22nd overall, while freshman Karlee Allen (77-83, +16) rounded out the team with a 34th place finish.

Weather cut the tournament down from 54 holes to 36. The field played one and a half rounds on Monday and finished the tournament on Tuesday morning.
The Blazers head South next weekend to host the Bama Beach Bash in Gulf Shores. The tournament, which is co-hosted with South Alabama, is scheduled for March 19-21.
