UAB Downed on the Road at UTEP

EL PASO – The UAB women's basketball team fell on the road to UTEP 74-53 on Friday night, its first matchup of a two-game series with the Miners.
Junior guard Margaret Whitley led the Blazers with a game-high 20 points, shooting 7-of-20 from the field and going 4-of-5 from the line.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby racked up a game-high 10 rebounds and eight points, missing an eighth straight double-double by two points.
Freshman Kylee Schneringer made her first career start, opening the game with a three-point basket.
Redshirt freshman Summer Schloss, who has appeared in four games this season, made two shots from the line, her first points since UAB's season-opener against Edward Waters on Nov. 25.
UAB (7-8, 2-7 C-USA) went into halftime down just 34-33, but struggled to get anything going in the second half.
The Blazers went 2-of-11 from the field in the third quarter, with Whitley scoring all five of UAB's points in the frame.
The Miners (11-5, 8-3 C-USA), who lead 47-38 entering the quarter, outscored UAB 27-15 in the fourth, led by UTEP guard Katia Gallegos who hit three baskets from range.
The Blazers shot 21-of-55 from the field and 5-of-27 from behind the arc in the game.
UAB looks to even the series against the Miners when they meet again on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. CST in the Don Haskins Center.
