BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's tennis team and first-year head coach Justin DeSanto are set to play 21 regular season matches this spring, including six home matches in Birmingham. UAB's spring schedule features two matches against SEC opponents and two in-league contests against Southern Miss and Old Dominion.
The Blazers open their spring campaign with nine matches away from Birmingham, kicking off the 2022 spring slate at Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have four Top 125 players in the ITA Division I Men's Singles rankings, including Florian Broska (No. 27) and Nemanja Malesevic (No. 36). UAB fell 7-0 to No. 20 Mississippi State this past season.
UAB will then take on Tennessee Tech in Homewood, Alabama, on Jan. 29. The Blazers will then close out the weekend with a road match at Jacksonville State on Jan. 30.
A string of in-state nonconference matches continues on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 with matchups against South Alabama and Alabama. The Jaguars finished 12-8 in 2021, while the Crimson Tide finished 14-12 a season ago. Alabama made the first round of the NCAA Tournament, falling 4-3 to Oregon. Ace Patrick Kaukovalta ranks No. 50 in the nation in the ITA Division I Men's Singles rankings.
The Green and Gold will then head to the Sunshine State for a pair of weekend matches at Florida Gulf Coast (Feb. 11-12). UAB will open the weekend against FGCU before concluding the trip with a neutral site contest against Buffalo.
UAB plays its first of two Conference USA matches of the spring when the Blazers travel to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, for a matchup at Southern Miss on Feb. 19. The Golden Eagles went 7-3 this past season, squeaking out a 4-3 victory over UAB in 2021. The Blazers will conclude their trip to Hattiesburg with a neutral site match against Lamar on Feb. 20.
UAB will then open its home schedule against ETSU on Feb. 26. The Buccaneers finished 13-8 this past season, winning their third consecutive SoCon title in April. ETSU's Dimitri Badra is currently ranked No. 53 in the ITA Division I Men's Singles rankings.
The Blazers will make a short trip to Atlanta for a match at Georgia State on Feb. 27 before returning to Birmingham for three straight home matches beginning on March 2. The Green and Gold blanked Alabama A&M 7-0 this past season and quickly dispatched North Alabama 6-1 in 2021.

The Eagles finished 12-10 in 2021, winning their opening match against Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Tournament.
A string of four straight road matches from March 19 at William & Mary to April 1 at Alabama State will bring the Blazers to near the end of their spring slate.
