BIRMINGHAM – Fresh off his first career start at South Alabama, UAB redshirt freshman quarterback Bryson Lucero has been named one of eight players nationwide to earn the Manning Award Star of the Week.
In front of an ESPN national audience on Thursday, Lucero was 18-of-28 for 319 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-10 victory over the Jaguars.
Lucero's 319 yards marked the first time a Blazer signal caller has thrown for over 300 yards since last year's game against South Alabama.
The Loma, Colo. native finds himself on a list that includes Mississippi Stat's K.J. Costello, Texas' Sam Ehlinger, UCF's Dillon Gabriel, Kansas State's Skylar Thompson, Florida's Kyle Trask, Liberty's Malik Willis and BYU's Zach Wilson.
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
College football fans can now go to the Allstate Sugar Bowl Facebook page to vote for what they think was the best performance from this past weekend. When voting closes on Thursday at 11 a.m. (Central), the top vote-getter will be announced as the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week.
Lucero and the Blazers (2-1) return home this Saturday to host UTSA at 11:30 a.m. on Homecoming and the fourth annual Children's Harbor game. Tickets are on sale by clicking here.
