Blazer Nation,
As we head into the final stretch of July and all continue to navigate these unprecedented times, I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. These past four months have certainly been unique in the history of college athletics, along with our world.
Earlier this month, we celebrated Independence Day and 244 years of progress as a country. Blazer student-athletes, along with our coaches and staff, are thankful for the opportunities this great country provides us. We are also fully committed to diversity and inclusion and will continue to take a stand against racial injustice. We remain dedicated to amplifying athlete and staff voices in response to systematic racial injustices in our country and are continuing to take steps within our department to embrace the cultural differences among our student-athletes and staff. Be on the lookout next week for additional information from UAB Athletics regarding ongoing initiatives.
We have continued to deal with a fluid situation related to fall sports these past few months and are making as many plans accordingly with the latest information at hand. Student-athlete health and well-being is and has always been our top priority; our administrative team is doing everything we can to safely play this coming fall. As we continue to monitor the situation, UAB Athletics has been preparing for a number of contingencies that will promote the health and safety of our student-athletes, staff, and fans. We will be sharing those details as we get closer to fall competitions.
I remain optimistic that we will be able to compete. UAB plans to offer classes on campus this fall, and has announced a combination of in-person and remote instruction. Blazer student-athletes began a safe return to campus in early June for voluntary workouts and we are anticipating fall sports teams starting their official preseason practices in August. There are thorough protocols in place for returning student-athletes and staff to ensure we minimize the risk for everyone involved. Our medical team has been pleased with how the return to campus plan is presently unfolding. We are extremely fortunate to have access to the best healthcare professionals in the world here in Birmingham, and our staff could not be more appreciative to work at UAB alongside these heroes.
Regarding fan preparations leading into the 2020 seasons, we are planning for athletics events this fall pursuant to state and county public health guidelines. The specific safety measures for our ticketed fall sports – football, men's and women's soccer, and volleyball - and the impact for how you view our games continues to evolve. As details come together, we will be sharing those fan experience plans with you in the weeks ahead.
Our staff is finalizing various models at Legion Field and will communicate those details as decisions are made in the next couple weeks. Football season ticket holders and UAB students will have top priority as we allocate seats leading into the 2020 season. Given the evolving circumstances, the best way to guarantee your seat is to purchase 2020 season tickets which start as low as $75. We anticipate single game tickets being available in mid-August once all season tickets have been assigned. Additionally, this year's season ticket holders and Blazer Boosters members will also have top priority leading into the 2021 season at Protective Stadium.
As we examine the health and safety components surrounding COVID-19, there are financial realities to the situation that we are also navigating. Your ongoing support of UAB Athletics through Blazer Boosters is critical and gives UAB student-athletes the greatest opportunity to Win Championships, Graduate with Honors and Make a Difference. Our Blazer Boosters staff has remained diligent in our efforts to generate revenues to sustain our annual operating budget and your continued support is instrumental to our success.
Your purchase of season tickets is also incredibly impactful towards creating a home field advantage for our coaches and student-athletes. Purchasing tickets also helps generate essential revenues that support our daily operations. I know many of you have already paid for your football season tickets and some of you are hesitant to do so because of current circumstances. In the event the season is affected, our ticket assurance program will provide our season ticket holders with multiple options including a refund, but please know your continued investment is vital to our financial well-being.
Men's basketball season tickets for the 2020-21 season are also on sale starting for as low as $100. Basketball renewal applications are available here and renewal statements were mailed during the first week of July. Coach Kennedy is looking forward to restoring the Bartow Arena magic during his first season at the helm. Also, don't forget that the 2020-21 Gold Card will gain you access to all home events for Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, Volleyball, Women's Basketball, Baseball and Softball. The Gold Card went on sale on July 1st and for only $65, you don't miss this great deal to catch the Blazers in action.
I am looking forward to being able to see you again soon and cheering our Blazers to victory in the months ahead. Let's wear our masks, adhere to social distancing guidelines and take care of ourselves and those around us. Following the advice of our health professionals on a daily basis will give us the best chance to return to normalcy in 2020-21 and beyond. We will beat this virus together and continue to Win As One.
GO Blazers!
