BIRMINGHAM – Redshirt sophomore placekicker Wilson Beaverstock has earned a spot on the Wuerffel Trophy Preseason Watch List, presented annually as College Football's Premier Award for Community Service.
This year's watch list has a record 114 players honored, the most since the award began in 2015. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
Beaverstock has been extremely active in the community since he arrived in Birmingham in 2018. He is currently in his second year working with Magic Moments, which grants sick children their lifelong dream. Last year, Beaverstock dressed up as prince charming and was able to tell his Children's Harbor match that she was going to Disney World.
Along with making regularly scheduled visits to the Children's Hospital, Beaverstock has also visited the VA Hospital to hand out game tickets.
He has participated in Habitat for Humanity twice and also volunteered his time during UAB's efforts in Touchdown for Trees in which the football team planted trees all over campus.
Beaverstock is currently shadowing a cardio thoracic surgeon at St. Vincent's Hospital and has logged many hours of surgery. He holds a 3.86 GPA in Psychology and is taking his premed requisites with the plan to go into med school. He intends to work in trauma surgery/emergency medicine or pediatrics when his football career is over.
The recipient of the award will be presented the Wuerffel Trophy in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. next February.
Beaverstock is now the seventh UAB player honored on a national preseason watch list. With the departure of three year starter Nick Vogel, Beaverstock will compete to be the starting kicker this fall.
Season tickets for 2020 are on sale starting as low as $75 with the Family Four Pack. Blazer Boosters members and current season ticket holders will have top priority for Protective Stadium entering 2021. Click here to purchase season tickets.
