BIRMINGHAM – The two-time defending SoCon Champion UAB rifle team placed five student-athletes on the league's Spring Academic All-Conference Team, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Earning a spot on the Academic All-Conference Team was sophomore Jordan Blankenship, junior Hayden Hayes, sophomore Zoe Lum, senior Lilly Vonderau and junior Blake Wingard.
"Congratulations to our many academic award winners," SoCon Commissioner Jim Schaus said. "These accomplishments are something that we value highly and celebrate widely as much as athletic success. Student always comes first in theory and in practice in the term student-athletes in the SoCon. Academic excellence is the hallmark of our 10 outstanding institutions. Thanks also to those faculty and campus staff who support our students in their success."
To be eligible for the SoCon Academic All-Conference Team, a student-athlete must achieve a 3.3 cumulative GPA while being a member of the final squad list during the traditional season for a varsity sanctioned sport by the Southern Conference. GPA calculations are based upon the student-athlete's cumulative GPA at the end of the semester during which competition takes place.
The five UAB student-athletes who made the Academic All-Conference Team have excelled both in competition and in the classroom. Along with helping UAB win back-to-back championships, they have all maintain impressive GPAs: Jordan Blankenship – 3.98, English; Hayden Hayes – 3.85, Public Health; Zoe Lum – 3.52 International Studies; Lilly Vonderau – 3.65, Accounting; Blake Wingard – 3.89, Electrical Engineering.
