BIRMINGHAM – For having the lowest stroke average of any rookie in the league, Khavish Varadan has been named the 2019-20 Conference USA Men's Golf Freshman of the Year.
Varadan finished his first season as a Blazer with an average of 72.2 and helped UAB catapult into the Top 25 as the Green and Gold reached No. 25 on Oct. 16, 2019.
"What an awesome honor for Khavish to be named Conference USA Freshman of the Year," said C-USA Coach of the Year Mike Wilson. "He came into our program with a lot of expectations, which is a tough burden for an 18 year old. He got off to a slow start in our first two events, but played at an extremely high level the rest of the season. I am really proud of him and excited to see what is to come in his future."
The Kuala Lampor, Maylasia native was under par in each of his final three tournaments of the season, and finished 11th overall in each of the last two by shooting a collegiate low 210 (-6) in both.
His low round came at the Mobile Sports Authority Intercollegiate in UAB's only spring tournament where he carded a five-under 67 in the opening round. He also shot a four-under 68 in consecutive rounds at the White Sands Intercollegiate in the Bahamas. Overall, he had nine rounds at or under par.
Varadan is now the fourth golfer in program history to earn Conference USA Freshman of the Year, joining Chris Devlin (1996-97), Blake West (2006-07) and Lee Hodges (2014-15).
Varadan enters his sophomore year as one of four returning players who were in the top five last season, as UAB once again remains the team to beat in Conference USA.
