BIRMINGHAM – Recent graduate Colton Schultz has been pegged the No. 36 hitter in college baseball based on the 2019 and 2020 seasons combined as announced by the NCAA. In conjunction with the NCAA, D1Baseball recognized the top 100 hitters in the nation over the course of the past two seasons.
The rankings were determined based on a final score that factored in plate discipline, hitting ability and game power. The tally was also adjusted based on park difficulty and strength of schedule to finalize each individual score on a 100-point scale. Each of the recognized hitters were required to make a minimum of 150 plate appearances in 2019 and another 35 in 2020.
Schultz was awarded an 86.4 final score for his performance over the past two seasons, posting the third-highest score by any Conference USA player on the list. The Huntsville, Ala., native's plate discipline was determined to be his strongest asset with an 86.7 rating based on the analyzed sabermetrics.
As for how the analytics translated to production, Schultz has been solid at the plate throughout his time with the Blazers. He's batted .290 with 165 hits through his 163 career games with 151 starts.
In 2019 alone, he led the team in hits (65) while landing second on the team in batting average (.316), homeruns (6) and RBI (43) by the season's end. Schultz was on a similar route in 2020 before the season's premature close as he led the team in RBI (16), tied for the team lead in homeruns (3) and was second on the team in hits (18) for a .290 batting average.
"Colton is exactly everything you want in a student-athlete first and foremost," said coach Perry Roth. "He's mature and a great worker with high character who leads. He is as low maintenance as you want and yet, he has a huge presence on the diamond and in the clubhouse. He's a gifted talent who takes his craft serious in his work and approach."
The utility player and mainstay in the outfield has graduated from the UAB School of Education, obtaining his undergraduate degree in kinesiology.
