Jordan Smith Named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM – For leading UAB's dominant defensive performance in its 21-16 West clinching victory at Rice on Saturday, redshirt junior defensive end Jordan Smith has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week.
Smith shared a team-high with seven tackles and added 2.5 sacks to his stat line. Specifically, Smith stepped up in the closing stages of the game as two of his sacks came with less than four minutes remaining, including one with 13 seconds left.
Smith and the Blazer defense were lights out against the Owls as the unit finished the game with five sacks, a season-high 12 tackles for loss, six pass breakups and one interception.
UAB held Rice to 254 yards of total offense, and was especially dominant in the second half, holding the Owls to just 75 total yards.
For the season, Smith has 37 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and eight quarterback hurries. His sacks, TFL and QBH are all team highs.
The win at Rice gave UAB its third-straight Conference USA West Division title. The Blazers are the first team in league history to appear in three-straight Conference USA Championship Games.
UAB is set to play Marshall in the 2020 Ryan Conference USA Football Championship this Friday, Dec. 18 in Huntington, W.Va. Kick is set for 6 p.m. CST on CBS Sports Network.
