Valenzuela Named C-USA Athlete of the Week

BIRMINGHAM — After pacing the Blazers to a fourth place finish at the Florida State Invitational, freshman Isabel Valenzuela has been named Conference USA Female Athlete of the Week.
Valenzuela placed 19th individually after a personal best time of 18:40.6 on the 5k course. As a team, the Blazers finished in fourth behind LSU, South Carolina and South Alabama with a team score of 115.
"Izzy has been a great example of a grinder," said head coach Matt Esche. "She brings 100% energy in every aspect of her life. Thus, this honor comes as no surprise. There is a lot more accomplishments to come with this talented freshman."
The Athlete of the Week honors marks the first time since 2013 a UAB runner has been named. The last being Elinor Kirk who took the honors twice that year.
Up next, the Blazers host the fourth annual Blazer Classic at Veterans Park in Hoover on Oct. 16. The first race is scheduled to go off at 7:45 am. Meet information can be found by clicking here.
