BIRMINGHAM – A pair of UAB redshirt freshmen in quarterback Bryson Lucero and kicker Matt Quinn have been named to the Freshman All-American Watch List by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
Lucero is one of eight quarterbacks on the list, while Quinn is one of three kickers to earn the distinction.
Lucero is 3-0 as UAB's starting quarterback this season. He has appeared in every game so far and has compiled 793 passing yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. In his first career start, Lucero threw for 319 yards and touchdowns in a 42-10 victory at South Alabama.
Quinn has made 4-of-5 field goal attempts and is a league-best 21-of-21 on PAT this year. He is coming off a game in which he made a career-high three field goals, including a career-best 44-yard kick in UAB's 37-14 victory over WKU. His 33 total points are second on the team only behind Spencer Brown (36).
This year's FWAA Freshman All-American team will represent the 20th since its inception and feature a list of seven semifinalists and three finalists later this season leading up to the unveil of the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year.
In 2017, Spencer Brown became the first UAB player in program history to earn FWAA Freshman All-America honors. Brown ran for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns as a true freshman.
The Blazers (4-1) are back in action this Friday, Oct. 23, when they host Louisiana (3-1) at Legion Field for their final non-conference game of the year. The contest features two of the top teams from their respective leagues as each are two-time defending divisional champs.
UAB, who looks to win its 22nd straight game at home, is running a special offer which features two tickets for $22 through 10/22. Click here and use the promo code TREAT to redeem the offer.
