BIRMINGHAM – UAB redshirt senior center Andrew Smith Jr. has been named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List, which is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football.
Smith Jr. started nine games at center last year and has played in and started three of UAB's four games this year. He has been a catalyst in helping UAB average 179.2 rushing yards per game, and the Blazers have only allowed two sacks this season, tied for the fourth fewest in the nation.
The Mount Olive, Miss. native was part of an offensive line unit that helped the Blazer backfield rush for over 2,000 yards in 2019, in addition to scoring 16 touchdowns on the ground. Those numbers have not faltered this season, as UAB has rushed for 717 yards and eight rush touchdowns through four games thus far.
Smith Jr. is one of eight players from Conference USA and one of 90 student-athletes nationwide named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List.
The Rimington Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association, which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football.
The winner of the award is set to be selected by three distinct teams, the Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of America. The center with the most first-place votes across all three committees will be named the 2020 recipient of the Rimington Trophy.
Smith Jr. and UAB are back in action on Saturday at Legion Field as they play host to WKU, with kickoff scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
