Garrett Marino Earns Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week

BIRMINGHAM – Senior defensive lineman Garrett Marino has been named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week for his career night in UAB's season opening 24-19 victory over Alabama State.
Marino led the team with a career-high nine tackles against the Hornets, all of which were solo tackles. Marino also tallied one of UAB's seven tackles for loss.
With the Blazers holding a 24-19 lead early in the fourth quarter, Marino had his two biggest stops of the evening on back-to-back plays during a goal-line stand.
As the Hornets were threatening to take the lead, Marino busted through the line on first and second down to help keep Alabama State out of the end zone and UAB eventually stopped them on fourth down.
For Marino, an Outland Trophy Award Watch List nominee, this is his first career Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Marino and the Blazers hit the road for a Week 2 contest at Akron. The game kicks at noon local time, 11 a.m. CST on CBS Sports Network. Saturday's matchup is the first time the two schools will meet on the gridiron.
