Blazers Carry Momentum into 19-20 Season from Outstanding Summer

BIRMINGHAM - The UAB men's golf team is set to open the 2019-20 season this weekend at the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate and enters that tournament with a world of confidence after tremendous summer performances.
"Our guys had a fantastic summer and I am excited to see how that translates into this weekend as we open the season at a course we typically play very well at," head coach Mike Wilson said. "We have an extremely competitive team this season and they are hungry to prove that they are contenders on the national stage."
It starts with redshirt senior William Walker III who is the team's top returning player. Walker III qualified for the U.S. Amateur by shooting -10 at Pensacola Country Club en route to a second-place finish and a berth in the most prestigious amateur tournament in the world.
Playing at the renowned Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, Walker III got off to a fast start by shooting -2 on Pinehurst No. 2. He would ultimately miss match play by one stroke but was able to stand toe-to-toe with the best amateur golfers in the world.
After redshirting last year, junior Ben Reichert looks poised to play a huge role for the Blazers this year. Reichert won two state amateur tournaments this summer, the 102nd Florida Amateur and the 97th New York State Amateur.
Additionally, sophomore Ethan Hagood captured the Alabama State Match Play Championship and looks to earn a spot in the lineup this season for the Blazers.
UAB opens the 2019-2020 campaign at a tournament they are very familiar with, the Jim Rivers Intercollegiate hosted by Louisiana Tech. UAB took home the team title at last year's event and Walker III won the individual championship.
UAB returns nine players from last year's team and has added one player to the roster in standout Khavish Varadan.
