UAB Football Game 12 Opponent Preview: at North Texas
7/25/2019 3:12:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM - If the past two years are any indication, UAB's regular season finale at North Texas on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. will have major championship implications on the line.
The game at Apogee Stadium features the last two C-USA West Division Championship as the Blazers and Mean Green have risen to dominance in the West. UAB has won 19 games since 2017, which is the most in Conference USA, but North Texas is right behind with 18 after back-to-back nine win seasons.
Along with being at the top of the league, the games UAB and North Texas have played the last two seasons have each been nail-biters that were decided by one possession.
Two years ago in Denton, the Blazers trailed 30-12 at halftime but roared back to tie the game at 43 with less than a minute to go before UNT drove down the field to kick a game-winning field goal. Last year at Legion Field, the Blazers shut out North Texas 19-0 in the second half for a come-from-behind 29-21 victory.
Series: UAB leads, 3-1
Last Meeting: Oct. 20, 2018: UAB 29-21
Current Streak: UAB - W1
The Mean Green have a legitimate Heisman candidate in quarterback Mason Fine. The senior is the NCAA active leader in career passing yards with 9,417, and has 64 career touchdown passes and 13 300-yard passing games to his credit.
It will be a critical for the Blazers to slow down Fine in Denton for a chance to win the game.
Last season in Birmingham, Fine threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns, but most of his damage was done in the first half as UNT took a 21-10 lead into the locker room. UAB made adjustments at halftime and was jumpstarted by Garrett Marino's safety of Fine minutes into the second half.
Spencer Brown was named the Conference USA Player of the Week for his efforts against North Texas last year, running for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Brown and Fine will be fighting for C-USA Player of the Year honors in 2019.
The Mean Green were picked to win the West Division in 2019, while UAB was selected fourth by the media. Southern Miss and Louisiana Tech were in between UNT and UAB.
The Blazers are 35 days away from opening the 2019 season, and less than a week away from beginning fall camp on Wednesday, July 31. UAB opens the season with Alabama State at Legion Field on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
