BIRMINGHAM – Senior defensive lineman Garrett Marino has been named to the Outland Trophy Award Watch List, annually given to the nation's most outstanding interior lineman by the Football Writers Association of America.
Marino is one of 83 players on the preseason watch list and only one of three players from Conference USA, along with Levi Brown of Marshall and Miles Pate of WKU.
The Mission Viejo, Calif. native has been a disruptive force in the league since 2017 and has recorded back-to-back All-Conference seasons.
In 2018, Marino helped pace UAB's record setting defense by being a monster in the run game, while add 19 tackles, 6.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks. Most notably, Marino scored eight points last year with a 48-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in a 31-24 victory against Tulane, and a safety against North Texas to jumpstart a come-from-behind 29-21 victory over the Mean Green.
Marino is the only returning starter on the defensive line and will look to carry a young but talented group up front.
The Outland Trophy is presented to the best interior offensive or defensive lineman in the nation.
The recipient of the 74th Outland Trophy will be announced during ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 12, live from the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the NFID Outland Trophy Awards Dinner sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee on Jan. 15, 2020. Up to eight semifinalists will be named on Nov. 20 in Omaha and three finalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 25.
The Blazers are 37 days away from the start of the 2019 season, which begins on Aug. 29 at Legion Field against Alabama State.
