BIRMINGHAM - With returning most of the team from the 2018 season that finished eighth in Conference USA, UAB cross country head coach Matt Esche has announced his team's 2019 schedule.
"The schedule for the 2019 cross country season is simple yet challenging", Esche said. "I believe that our schedule will have us ready for the challenges that the Conference USA Championships and NCAA South Region Championships provide us in November. For our overall young squad, the less frills the better."
The Blazers are scheduled to run five regular season events, including a home event in Montevallo. UAB starts the season on a familiar trip to Memphis, Tenn., for the Memphis Twilight Classic on Aug. 31, an event the Blazers won two seasons ago.
"Memphis is always a favorite of ours to open with. While Vanderbilt and Missouri are going to provide some outstanding competition."
The Blazers remain in the state of Tennessee for Vanderbilt's Commodore Classic set for Sept. 14 in Nashville.
UAB will continue traveling to compete on Sept. 28 with an event in Missouri at the Mizzou XC Challenge and in Huntsville Ala., at the UAH Chargers Open, before UAB returns back home to host the Blazer Classic on Oct. 18.
"For the 2nd year in a row we host the Blazer Classic. Last year we had 22 teams and so far, this year's home meet is shaping up to be another outstanding competition."
The Green and Gold open their postseason at the Conference USA Championships, hosted by Western Kentucky, in Bowling Green, Ken., on Nov. 2 where the Blazers look to improve upon their results from last season.
The NCAA South Regional Championship is set for Nov. 15 on the campus of Florida State, while the National Championship is slated for Nov. 17 in Terre Haute, Ind.
