Brown Once Again Named to Doak Walker Award Watch List

BIRMINGHAM – The preseason accolades continue to roll in for junior running back Spencer Brown as he was named to the Doak Walker Award Watch List on Wednesday, which is annually presented to the nation's top collegiate running back.
This is the second straight year Brown has been on the Preseason Doak Walker Award Watch List, and the third time in his career, as he was added to the midseason list in 2017 during his freshman All-American season.
Brown enters his true junior campaign as the nation's sixth active career leading rusher. In his first two seasons, Brown has compiled 2,556 rushing yards and 27 total touchdowns.
The Kimberly, Ala. native is coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,227 yards and a school record 16 touchdowns. Along with the single season rushing touchdowns record, Brown also established the new program benchmark for single season total touchdowns (17) and single season points scored (102).
With 12 career 100-yard rushing games to his credit, Brown needs one more 100-yard rushing performance for the all-time lead in that category. He is currently tied with Joe Webb for most in program history.
Brown also needs 261 more rushing yards to become the school's leader in career rushing yards. A 2017 FWAA Freshman All-American and 2018 First Team All-Conference USA Selection, Brown has averaged 94.7 rushing yards per game for his career.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced on Nov. 20. The committee will cast a second vote beginning Dec. 2 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2019 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 12 on ESPN.
Brown and the Blazers are 43 days away from opening the 2019 season. The reigning C-USA champs open their slate with Alabama State on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Legion Field. Kickoff set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
