Spencer Brown Named to Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List

BIRMINGHAM - Junior running back Spencer Brown has been named to the Maxwell Award which is annually presented to the College Football Player of the Year, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Monday.
This is the second straight year Brown has been named to the prestigious watch list, which has honored the College Player of the Year since 1937. Brown is one of two players from Conference USA to earn a spot on the 2019 Maxwell Award Watch List, along with North Texas quarterback Mason Fine.
Brown enters his true junior campaign as the nation's sixth active career leading rusher. In his first two seasons, Brown has compiled 2,556 rushing yards and 27 total touchdowns.
The Kimberly, Ala. native is coming off a season in which he rushed for 1,227 yards and a school record 16 touchdowns. Along with the single season rushing touchdowns record, Brown also established the new program benchmark for single season total touchdowns (17) and single season points scored (102).
With 12 100-yard rushing games to his credit, Brown needs one more 100-yard rushing performance for the all-time lead in that category. He is currently tied with Joe Webb for most in program history.
Brown also needs 261 more rushing yards to become the school's leader in career rushing yards. A 2017 FWAA Freshman All-American and 2018 First Team All-Conference USA Selection, Brown has averaged 94.7 rushing yards per game for his career.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Oct. 29, and three finalists will be unveiled on Nov. 25. The winner of the Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 12.
Brown and the Blazers are 45 days away from opening the 2019 season. The reigning C-USA champs open their slate with Alabama State on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Legion Field with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
