UAB Football Game 4 Opponent Preview: at WKU Hilltoppers
6/24/2019 5:52:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM – UAB's Conference USA title defense begins on Sept. 28 as the Blazers open league play on the road at WKU. The game kicks at 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Hilltoppers are one of two C-USA divisional crossover opponents for the Blazers this season, along with Old Dominion (Oct. 19). WKU will make the return trip to Birmingham in 2020.
WKU was 3-9 last season and enters year one under new head coach Tyson Helton.
All-Time Series: Tied, 3-3
Last Meeting: Oct. 4, 2014 – UAB 42-39
Current Streak: UAB – W3
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
WKU endured a six-game losing streak in the middle of last season, but ended the year on a high note by winning its final two games. Of their nine losses, four were by one possession or less.
Redshirt senior Lucky Jackson is the team's top returning skilled position player. The wide receiver had 50 catches for 552 yards and four touchdowns in 2018.
For UAB, the departure of wide receivers Xavier Ubosi, Andre Wilson, Collin Lisa and Kailon Carter means that 123 catches, 2,285 yards and 16 touchdowns need to be replaced from last year's championship team.
However, an unproven yet extremely talented group of wideouts are ready for their turn.
Austin Watkins and Kendall Parham are the only two returning receivers who had catches last year, but both had an incredibly strong spring season and look poised to be major contributors in 2019.
Myron Mitchell and RaJae' Johnson are two other receivers to keep an eye on. Mitchell has been with the team for a year now and was dominant in spring drills, while Johnson arrived on campus in June and comes to UAB via San Mateo College where he was the No. 1 rated JUCO wide receiver in the country.
Coming off a season in which the Blazers set the school record for total yards (5,680), more records could fall in 2019 as Tyler Johnston III has plenty of weapons at receiver.
