6/20/2019 4:28:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM - Following its first of two bye weeks, the UAB football team returns to Legion Field on Saturday, Sept. 21 to host in-state foe South Alabama as the two teams meet on the gridiron for the first time.
If the Blazers can get past Alabama State in Week 1, they will look to extend their home winning streak to 14 when the Jags come to town. UAB has truly made Legion Field a home field advantage since the start of the 2017 season, going 12-0, which is the nation's fifth longest active home winning streak entering 2019.
For the first time in program history, the Blazers play on NFL Network when they host South Alabama. Kick is set for 2:30 p.m.
All-Time Series: First Meeting
Last Meeting: N/A
Current Streak: N/A
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
The Jags are coming off a 3-9 season in 2018 and look for improvement under second year head coach Steve Campbell.
South Alabama opens the campaign on the road at Nebraska, then has two home games against Jackson State and Memphis before traveling to Legion Field to face the Blazers. The Jags then play eight straight Sun Belt games to conclude the season.
Big things are expected from USA's junior defensive tackle Tyree Turner. He finished last season with 51 total tackles and a team-best 10.0 TFL to go along with 4.0 sacks.
The Blazers also have a stout interior lineman in two-time All-Conference USA performer Garrett Marino. Entering his final season as a Blazer, Marino will be tasked with bringing along a young defensive line as he is the only player with true experience entering 2019.
Marino finished last year with 6.5 TFL and 3.5 sacks, while also adding a 48-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown against Tulane and a critical safety against North Texas, both of which were UAB one-possession wins.
PROMOTIONS:
The South Alabama game is the annual Extra Yard for Teachers Day in conjunction with the College Football Playoff Foundation. Along with recognizing local teachers and educators from throughout the state, the game on Sept. 21 also serves as Band Day.
The Blazers will recognize the late Mike Slive and his Foundation with the Mike Slive Prostate Cancer Awareness Game against South Alabama.
