DALLAS – Nikolai Manchev, a senior on UAB's men's tennis team is one of 14 student-athletes in Conference USA to receive the Air Force Reserve Spring Spirit of Service Award.
The award honors the league's student-athletes with significant community service endeavors, excellent academic standing and notable athletic achievements. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with these honorees representing spring sports: baseball, men's and women's golf, softball, men's and women's outdoor track and men's and women's tennis.
Manchev has completed over 100 hours of community service this year, most of them coming from almost daily visits to Children's of Alabama Hospital where he collects and washes wagons that patients use instead of wheelchairs.
In addition to his volunteering, Manchev excels in the classroom with a 3.76 GPA as a biology and chemistry major. He was a part of the Dean's List for Spring 2017, Spring 2018 and Fall 2018 in addition to earning a spot on the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.
Manchev was recently honored at the UAB Green and Golden Globes for his community service hours, as he received the UAB Spirit of Service award.
"I am truly honored to be the recipient of this year's prestigious Spirit of Service Award," said Manchev. "I feel humbled and privileged to be a part of the UAB community and to serve it with my best abilities. I have learnt that teamwork, dedication and compassion is the key to success.
"The UAB core values: integrity, respect and excellence, motivate me to work even harder in order to maintain UAB's image and reputable standards. Teammates, coaches, teachers and friends, UAB family, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you."
