6/13/2019 3:39:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM – For the next six weeks, the Blazers' 2019 football schedule will be broken down with an in-depth opponent feature for all 12 games of the season. The opponent breakdowns will highlight what to look for in every game, key numbers, current trends and everything Blazer Nation needs to know about UAB's title defense.
UAB kicks off the season by welcoming Alabama State to Legion Field on Thursday night, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
All-Time Series: Alabama State leads, 2-1
Last Meeting: Sept. 20, 2008: UAB 45-10
Current Streak: UAB – W1
Despite only being separated by 90 miles, this will be the fourth all-time meeting between the Blazers and Hornets. Alabama State won the first two games back in the mid 90s, while UAB won the most recent matchup in 2010.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR:
UAB:
Records could fall on the opening night of the 2019 season for Spencer Brown. The junior needs one more 100-yard game to becoming the all-time leader in career 100-yard rushing games at UAB. He is currently tied with Joe Webb at 12 apiece, and will look to break that record in Week 1.
He's also 261 yards shy of becoming the career rushing leader at UAB. Brown has rushed for 200 yards once in his career, coming at Southern Miss when he had a career-best 209 yards in Hattiesburg as a true freshman.
With 2,556 career rushing yards, Brown enters 2019 ranked sixth nationally amongst NCAA active career rushing leaders.
ALABAMA STATE:
Running back Ezra Gray returns for his senior year after leading the team with 384 yards on 100 carries last year. He looks to gain the majority of the carries this season.
ASU finished 4-7 last season. After playing at UAB in Week 1, the Hornets are home for four-straight contests.
BANNER REVEAL:
Be sure to enter Legion Field early on the 29th as UAB will be revealing its 2018 Conference USA and Boca Raton Bowl Championship banners.
HOME COOKING:
Since UAB's return to the playing field in 2017, the Blazers are undefeated at home with a perfect 12-0 record. UAB enters the 2019 season with the nation's fifth longest active home winning streak and looks to make it lucky No. 13 against Alabama State.
