BIRMINGHAM - The UAB football team will continue one of college football's greatest new traditions of honoring Children's Harbor on Homecoming which is set for October 19 against Old Dominion at Legion Field.
The Blazers will wear their alternate grey and lime uniforms with the names of patients from nearby Children's Harbor on their back. The uniforms have made national headlines each of the last two years the and the Homecoming games have had dramatic endings.
The Blazers' Homecoming game in 2017 ended in thrilling fashion with a blocked field goal attempt against Louisiana Tech as time expired to defeat the Bulldogs 23-22 for the first time in school history. Last year, UAB outscored North Texas 19-0 in the second half to storm back for a 29-21 victory over the Mean Green.
UAB is coming off its best season in program history in which the Blazers finished 11-3 overall and won the program's first C-USA title and bowl game. UAB is 12-0 at Legion Field since 2017 and owns the nation's fifth longest active home winning streak entering the 2019 campaign.
Despite losing 35 seniors, the Blazers return a cast of veteran players, headlined by All-America running back Spencer Brown. Brown re-wrote the record books as a true sophomore by rushing for 1,227 yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns. He enters his junior year 261 rushing yards shy of becoming UAB's career leader in that category.
Incumbent starter Tyler Johnston III quarterbacked UAB to all three of its championship games last year, including a 26-23 overtime victory against Southern Miss to clinch the West Division, a 27-25 triumph at Middle Tennessee to win the C-USA crown, and a 37-13 victory over Northern Illinois in the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl. Johnston III threw for a career-high 373 yards and four touchdowns in the bowl game.
