Blazers Fall in Round Two of the ITC Championships

BIRMINGHAM - As the first UAB bowler to qualify for the ITC Singles Championships, Rachel Strogin finished in fifth place over the first two days of competition in Ohio.
To begin her tournament campaign, Strogin bowled six qualifying games before being seeded into the bracket for match play. In the pre-tournament qualifiers the junior notched scores of 198, 184, 221, 171, 241, and 220 for a total pin-fall of 1,235, placing her as the sixth seed out of 24 and giving her a bye in the first round of tournament play.
Bracket games consisted of a three game total pin-fall format. In her first round, Strogin matched up with Fairleigh Dickinson's Aimee Sherman and secured a 551-539 victory to move on to the final eight.
Round two saw the Ohio native face off with McKendree's Breanna Clemmer. Stogin took game one by a score of 226-213, but fell to Clemmer in games two and three with a final score of 611-673, finishing her ITC Singles Championship debut tied with four bowlers for fifth-place overall.
UAB wrapped up team play at the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships on Friday morning, falling in the second round of bracket play.
To begin the team championship, UAB faced a series of 24 qualifying baker matches. The Blazers found themselves in 15th position after the first block of 12 games with a total pin-fall of 2,130 and an average score of 177.5 per match.
The Green and Gold pushed itself to the 12th seed entering bracket play after the second block of qualifiers, finishing with a pin-fall of 4,431 and an average of 184.63 per match.
Entering the first round of the best-of-seven, double elimination bracket play, UAB matched up with fifth-seeded Webber International.
The Blazers took game one 180-156, but narrowly fell in game two, 166-165. Game three went to UAB by a score of 193-166, but Webber bounced back to secure games four (212-193), five (194-191) and six (189-167), taking round one, 4-2.
With one loss entering round two, the Green and Gold fell to the bottom bracket to face off with Mount Mercy. UAB fought to force the game into a sixth match, but the pins did not fall its way as Mount Mercy took round two, 4-2 (180-187, 191-163, 172-160, 188-200, 179-190, 177-188).
