3/30/2019 1:21:00 PM | Football
BIRMINGHAM – On a day full of high energy and big time play making, the UAB football team completed its 11th practice of spring ball on Saturday morning at the Football Operations Center.
THREE TAKEAWAYS:
The Pepsi Spring Game is exactly one week from today. Tickets to the game on April 6 are $5 and can be purchased by clicking here or calling 205-975-UAB1. Kickoff at Legion Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
THREE TAKEAWAYS:
- Wide receiver Austin Watkins had a trio of touchdown catches today and he is becoming the go-to receiver for Tyler Johnston III, along with Myron Mitchell and Kendall Parham. Watkins' physical presence on the outside has been on full display throughout spring camp and he's poised for a breakout season in 2019.
- The reason Watkins is scoring so many touchdowns is because Johnston III is putting the deep ball right where it needs to be. Johnston's deep pass has been wildly accurate this spring, and he is coming off a season in which he threw for 1,275 yards and 11 touchdowns in his five starts down the stretch of the season (255.0 yards/game).
- Despite the offensive production, the defense also made big plays as well, including interceptions from Will Boler, CD Daniels and Grayson Cash. The secondary is a unit that lost three starters a year ago, and these three have inserted themselves into the discussion for starting roles this upcoming season.
