BIRMINGHAM - The UAB track and field team won two events and placed in the top-five in 10 others on Friday at the Jaguar Opener in Mobile, Alabama.
UAB won the 4x100 relay with a time of 46.11 with Louise Wieland, Ebony Tolliver, Alyssa Nelson and Amelie Dierke participating in the event. The Blazers' other win came in the 100m as Dierke placed first with a time of 11.87.
"Our staff feels like we got a lot accomplished for our first outdoor meet," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "For the first outdoor meet, there are new and longer events like the 100m hurdles versus the 60m hurdles, the hammer throw versus the weight throw, the 4x100 relay. There are a lot of adjustments."
The Green and Gold set six personal records on the day in Dierke's 100m time, Brittany Floyd's time of 15.48 in the 100m hurdles, along with Serena Martinez's time of 4:47.04 in the 1500m. Shauntia Landrum set two PRs as she recorded a 5.37m in the long jump and 11.66m in the triple jump. Zieandrea Bridges set one PR other own while also breaking a school record when she placed in the top-10 by recording a 47.94m in the hammer throw.
"The girls came out and competed well. They came away with lots of top-five and top-10 finishes in every event and a few event wins," Thomas said. "Brittany Floyd and Tia Landrum jumped well. Zee (Bridges) threw a school record in the hammer, which was a highlight for sure. Ameile sprinted well to win the 100m as did the 4x100 to win. Serena had a good day racing the 1500m also."
UAB's 10 top-5 finishes came in the 4x100m, 1500m, 400m, 100m, 800m, 400m hurdles, 200m, hammer throw, long jump and triple jump.
"All around we had a good day," Thomas said. "We need to keep building on today and keep competing hard to get ready for Mississippi State and Vanderbilt next week."
UAB returns to action next weekend to take part in the Mississippi State relays in Starkville, Mississippi.
