AIKEN, S.C. – The UAB men's golf team continued its strong play as the Blazers tied for second place overall at The Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in their second spring tournament of the season.
Dating back to the end of fall season, the Blazers have placed no less that fourth in each of their last four tournaments, which includes winning two of those contests (La. Tech and Loyola), along with today's second place finish.
The Blazers tied with Virginia for second and only finished behind South Carolina who won the tournament. No. 13 Clemson finished in fourth place and Memphis rounded out the top five. With the second-place finish, UAB improved its overall season record to 74-25-3.
"It was an awesome round by our guys today," head coach Mike Wilson said. "We knew it was going to be a tough day with the winds and pin locations. I'm really proud of how we finished as a team."
Individually, William Walker III led the Blazers as he tied for second overall at -4. Walker III opened the tournament with a six under 64, and finished his tournament by shooting two over in the second round and even par today (64-72-70). This is the second straight tournament Walker III has tied for second.
Senior John Hayden had a very consistent tournament en route to tying for 12th place overall. Hayden shot 71-70-71 to finish the tournament at +2.
Sophomore Nick Robillard also continued his solid play by notching his second-straight top 15 finish as he shot +4 (72-71-71) and tied for 15th.
Murray Naysmith (T46) and John Snoddy (T60) rounded out UAB's efforts this week. Snoddy moved up 17 spots on Tuesday after carding a +2 to assist in the team score on the final day of competition.
It is a quick turnaround for the Blazers as they only have three days off before playing at The Schenkel Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia Southern. The tournament is scheduled for this Friday-Sunday, March 15-17, in Statesboro, Ga.
