TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The UAB cross country team placed 18th at the NCAA South Region Championships on Friday. The Blazers ran the 6,000-meter race at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Fla. as host team No. 11 Florida State took home the gold among the field of 27.
Redshirt junior Celestial Moon paced the Blazers to the finish for the second time this season, landing in 89th place. Shortly behind Moon was senior Serena Martinez with freshman Lauren Robinson trailing as the third Blazer clocking in. Junior Bethan Evans, sophomore Laura Thompson, graduate senior Kaleigh Roach and sophomore Britney Johnson rounded out UAB's finishes.
"The ladies learned a lot today. We had five girls race today that ran last year on the same course at the meet. All five ran faster than last year. That's a testament to the girls' hard work, focus and dedication," said coach Matt Esche. "I'm most impressed with the turnaround from the middle of the year to now. If you would have told me we would be ranked and in the top 18, I would have taken it. The girls have set the tone for not only next fall, but also the track season. I know we have unfinished business on the oval and can't wait to see what we accomplish."
UAB concludes the season after being ranked No. 15 in the NCAA South Region. Martinez, Moon and Robinson each led the Blazers twice in UAB's six meets this year.
