LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - UAB Defensive Coordinator David Reeves has once again been named a nominee for the Broyles Award, which is annually presented to college football's top assistant coach by the Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation.
Reeves was a top 15 semifinalist for the Broyles Award in 2018, and is one of 41 nominees in 2019. The 41 nominees were selected from approximately 1,500 FBS assistant coaches, and a 20-member selection committee of distinguished head coaches, broadcasters and FWAA representatives will select 15 semifinalists, five finalists and an overall winner.
The five finalists will be invited to Little Rock, Ark., where the 2019 Broyles Award winner will be announced on Tuesday, December 10, at the Marriott Hotel.
Reeves' unit is once again playing at an elite level as the Blazers are ranked 6th nationally in total defense. UAB lost eight starters from last year's team that finished the season ranked 9th nationally in total defense and has not missed a beat this year.
Along with ranking sixth in total defense, the Blazers also ranks 2nd nationally in fumble recoveries (13), 4th in third down defense (.277) and 6th in passing yards allowed (163.0), sacks per game (3.56) and tackles for loss per game (8.4).
Reeves is responsible for coaching the linebackers as well, and his group is led by UAB's top two tacklers in Kristopher Moll and Noah Wilder. Moll is a candidate for C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. He has 69 total tackles, 10.0 TFL, 5.5 sacks, six quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Wilder is second on the team with 58 total tackles.
The Blazers (6-3, 3-2 C-USA) return home this Saturday for a C-USA west division matchup with UTEP (1-8, 0-6 C-USA). Kick is set for 12 p.m. on ESPN3 and UAB looks to extend the nation's fourth longest active home winning streak to 17 straight.
UAB will be honoring service men and women with the third annual Salute to Service game. Fans can participate by donating a $10 ticket to the Tickets for Troops initiative which will then be distributed to a military member through VetTix. To donate, click here and use the promo code: TFT
