SAN JOSE, Calif. – It was a monumental night for the UAB football program and head coach Bill Clark as he was awarded the annual Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year Award on Saturday in conjunction with the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Presented by the Football Writers Associate of America (FWAA) and the Allstate Sugar Bowl since 1957, Clark was named Coach of the Year on Dec. 13 and officially accepted his recognition Saturday evening at the awards reception in San Jose.
"I would like to thank the Football Writers Association of America and the Allstate Sugar Bowl for this prestigious honor," Clark said. "This is an entire team award and it wouldn't have been possible without the endless dedication and work from our players and staff."
In just UAB's second year back to the playing field, Clark guided the Blazers to unprecedented success which saw the program win a school record 11 games, including its first Conference USA Championship and its first bowl victory.
The Blazers defeated Middle Tennessee 27-25 on the Blue Raiders' home turf, and capped the storybook season with a 37-13 triumph over Northern Illinois in the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl.
In two years since the reinstatement of the program, Clark and the Blazers are 19-8 overall, its most combined wins over a two-year span in school history.
To celebrate Clark's National Coach of the Year, along with the two championships won this season, Mayor Randall Woodfin and the City of Birmingham announced that January 18 will be "UAB Blazers Football Day" and there will be a parade on campus at 4 p.m.
