UAB Hits Midway Point of Fall Camp

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Now at the midway point of fall camp, the UAB football is inching closer to its first game of the 2018 season which is just 15 days away as UAB hosts Savannah State at Legion Field on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
TAKEAWAYS:
On the depth at running back:
"We've got a bunch of good players. Everyone talks about Spencer [Brown], but take a guy like James Noble III. What a great guy who know the whole offensive inside and out. He knows the offensive line, knows the protection. James is a guy working with the 3s and 4s, but sometimes he gets in there with the 1s and 2s and does it with such a great attitude. It is a very deep group."
On James Noble III (Continued):
"He is a quiet leader. He is one of those guys who comes to work. Coach [Hindley] Brigham loves all of his guys, but James is special. He is one of those guys who doesn't say a lot but leads by example. He is always putting in extra work and is the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. He is really good in protection and he is just a quiet leader.
On the wide receivers:
"That is a group that also has a chance to be really special. We'll see. That's kind of what the whole offense is saying. We had a solid year last year but we are expecting big things."
On the offensive line:
"We have big expectations for the offensive line and I have put it out there. I think they have the ability to be the best unit in the league. All five of them have played together but our depth is better. Some of these guys, besides the starting five, gives us a chance to be really good."
On what else they want to work on for the remainder of camp:
"We kind of backed off today with shells. We have been going for a while, so we have tried to do two days of pads and one day of shells. Because this is an older group, it has been a very physical camp to this point. We want to try to protect them but get better at the same time. We have a few more things to get in, and then we start prep for game week."

TAKEAWAYS:
- The Blazers reduced to shells today, and will be back in full pads on Thursday. In a post-practice interview, head coach Bill Clark noted that with a veteran team, camp has been physical up to this point and now they start mixing in lighter days to be ready for Savannah State.
- NFL scouts from the Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins attended practice today, bringing the total number to 12 scouts who have attended practice in the first two weeks. Along with the Browns and Redskins, scouts from New England, Buffalo, New York Jets, Indianapolis, Oakland, Arizona, San Francisco, Seattle, Green Bay and Chicago have watched practice.
- The NFL attention is due in large part to the fact that UAB has 36 seniors on its roster, which is the second most nationally only behind Navy (37). The Blazers also return the second most starters in the country (20), and are tied for the most offensive starters nationally (10).
