UAB Celebrates at Beach Volleyball Groundbreaking

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Department of Athletics hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the beach volleyball program on Monday morning, Aug. 13 to celebrate construction of the new state-of-the-art beach volleyball complex.
The new five-court facility, located adjacent to Bartow Arena and the Football Operations Center, will provide the Blazers an opportunity to host bigger and more prestigious events on campus with efficiency by expanding from three to five courts.
These courts will also give the Blazers a competitive advantage as they continue to build a championship pedigree as members of the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA). The CCSA sent four teams to the eight-team NCAA National Championship in 2018 (Florida State, LSU, South Carolina and FIU), a tournament which UAB hosts annually and will continue to do so through at least 2022 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
Head Coach Kyra Iannone enters her second year leading the Blazers and has the program trending towards national prominence. In her inaugural season, Iannone guided the Blazers to their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent with a 3-2 victory at No. 8 South Carolina on March 25.
The Blazers also received votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Associate (AVCA) Top 20 for five weeks during the year, marking the first time ever receving votes in the national poll.
Along with comments from Director of Athletics Mark Ingram and UAB President Dr. Ray Watts, Iannone addressed the crowd to express her gratitude for the development and support of the beach volleyball program.
"I came to UAB one year ago for reasons like this," Iannone said. "The University and Department of Athletics has shown a dedication and commitment to excellence in building a championship program and this new facility is proof that we can be one of the top teams in the nation."
Construction on the new facility is anticipated to be complete in December of 2018 and the Blazers will have their new home to compete in for the start of the upcoming 2019 season.
