BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - As the induction for the UAB Hall of Fame Class of 2018 inches closer, UAB Athletics will spend a week on each individual inductee looking into their storied careers, beginning this week with former men's golfer Graeme McDowell.
Statistically the greatest golfer in UAB history, McDowell put together the most celebrated golf career as a Blazer and has since followed that up with a tremendous career on the PGA and European Tour.
A Blazer from 1999-2002, McDowell won nine individual tournaments, including six during the 2001-02 season en route to winning the Haskins Award, given to the most outstanding collegiate golfer in the United States. He is tied at the top for the lowest 54-hole score in program history (197) and has the second-lowest 18-hole (63) and 36-hole (132) scores at UAB.
He led UAB in stroke average all three years as a Blazer and is still the only player in program history to have a season stroke average under 70 with a school-record 69.90 average in 2001-02.
In 2002, McDowell finished fourth at NCAA Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, which was on the heels of a 16th-place finish in 2001. He was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Year for both the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons, as well as being a First Team All-America honoree in 2002 and a Second Team All-America selection in 2001.
For his outstanding career as a Blazer, Conference USA recognized him as the C-USA Athlete of the Decade for 1995-2005.
McDowell turned pro in 2002 and reached the pinnacle of his career in 2010 when he won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach which, propelled him to being named the 2010 European Tour Golfer of the Year.
During his professional career, McDowell has won 10 European Tour events and three PGA Tour events. In 2011, McDowell was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire for his contributions to his country of Northern Ireland.
McDowell will be honored on Nov. 2 at the Hall of Fame Banquet at The Club, and will also be recognized the following day at UAB's football game against UTSA. Click here to purchase a ticket to the 2018 Hall of Fame Banquet.
