UAB Bowling Earns NTCA Academic Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB bowling team added another impressive accolade to its already long list of accomplishments from the 2017-18 season as it was one of a record 38 teams to earn the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) All-Academic Team Award, the bowling organization announced.
The program also had five individuals earn NTCA All-Academic honors after Rachael Berg, Cayla Davidson, Samantha Johnson, Sierra Lewis and Morgan Mullinax cemented their place amongst a record-setting 268 student-athletes from 55 schools to earn the academic achievement.
All five UAB individuals were members of the 2018 Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll, while Johnson was also a recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal.
UAB has now received the All-Academic Team Award in consecutive seasons after claiming the honor for the first time last season, while the five student-athletes earning All-Academic honors marks the most in program history. In total, 11 UAB bowlers have earned individual recognition from the NTCA for their academic excellence.
"Our goal is always to remember that as a student-athlete, we always put the student first," head coach Michelle Crews said. "We had a fantastic year on the lanes, but to have almost half our roster make the All-Academic Team and for our team GPA to place us on the Team All-Academic list makes me prouder than almost anything we could ever accomplish on the lanes. I look forward to the team getting back in August and pushing ourselves harder than ever as we begin our first season in the MEAC."
To earn the All-Academic Team Award, programs must post a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher over the course of the academic year, which the Blazers successfully achieved after finishing the year with a 3.350 cumulative GPA. Individually, student-athletes must obtain a cumulative GPA of 3.4 or higher during the academic year.
