BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB beach volleyball team is one of 23 beach teams around the country to be honored for its prowess in the classroom as the Blazers received the AVCA Team Academic Award.
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"This award is a representation of the first-class student-athletes we have on our team and how they put forth maximum effort in every facet of their lives," head coach Kyra Iannone said. "A part of building a championship program is making sure they are balancing all aspect of being a student-athlete, and I am proud of how serious our team takes their academic endeavors."
UAB had another very strong year in the classroom with a collective team GPA of 3.57 for the 2017-18 academic year.
Haley Jared and Emily Martinez each earned a spot on the CCSA All-Academic Team, and both were recognized as the top student in their respective programs at UAB this past season (Jared - Electrical Engineering, Martinez - Accounting).
Three players posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall and five in the spring. Overall, 13 players on the team carry GPAs over a 3.0.
On the court, the Blazers had one of their most significant years under Iannone in her first season as head coach. Among the many milestones was defeating No. 8 South Carolina for their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent, and receiving votes in the AVCA Top 20 for five weeks during the season.
