BIRMINGHAM, Ala. β Sophomore running back Spencer Brown has been selected to the All-Conference USA Preseason Team which was voted on by the league's 14 head coaches.
Β
The preseason honor adds to a growing list of accolades for Brown heading into the 2018 season, as he was also named to the Maxwell Award Watch List and Bruce Feldman's Freaks List.
Β
Brown re-wrote the UAB record book in his rookie season en route to becoming the Blazers' first-ever FWAA Freshman All-America honoree. The Birmingham native ran for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns and was also recognized as the Conference USA Freshman of the Year.
Β
Brown had six 100-yard rushing performances, five of which came against league opponents. His 102.2 rushing yards per game were the third most in the nation amongst freshmen only behind Jonathan Taylor (Wisconsin) and AJ Dillon (Boston College).
Β
It took Brown just eight games to break Jordan Howard's freshman rushing record, and he did so with a career night at Southern Miss when he ran for 209 yards to lead the Blazers to a 30-12 victory over the Golden Eagles. In the process, he became just the seventh player in program history to rush for over 200 yards in a game.
Β
The UAB offense returns 10 starters in 2018, which is tied for the most in the nation with Florida and Michigan State. Brown will run behind a veteran offense line that returns four starters and a fifth in Rishard Cook who made four starts a year ago.
Β
The Blazers are just over 40 days away from opening up the 2018 campaign on Thursday night, Aug. 30 at Legion Field against Savannah State.
