BIRMINGHAM, Ala. β On the heels of his All-America freshman campaign, true sophomore Spencer Brown has been named to the Maxwell Award Preseason Watch List, annually given to college football's most outstanding player.
Β
Brown re-wrote the UAB record book in his rookie season en route to becoming the Blazers' first-ever FWAA Freshman All-America honoree. The Birmingham native ran for 1,329 yards and 10 touchdowns and was also recognized as the Conference USA Freshman of the Year.
Β
His 1,329 rushing yards were the second most by a freshman in C-USA history and the third most by any player in UAB history.
Β
Brown had six 100-yard rushing performances, five of which came against league opponents. His 102.2 rushing yards per game were the third most in the nation amongst freshmen behind Jonathan Taylor (Wisconsin) and AJ Dillon (Boston College).
Β
It took Brown just eight games to break Jordan Howard's freshman rushing record and he did so with a career night at Southern Miss when he ran for 209 yards, leading the Blazers to a 30-12 victory over the Golden Eagles. In the process, he became the seventh player in program history to rush for over 200 yards in a game.
Β
Brown enters the 2018 season 15 pounds lighter than he was as a freshman, checking in at 220, and has increased his weight room metrics. He was recently ranked No. 40 on Bruce Feldman's Top 50 'Freaks List' for the 2018 season.
Β
The UAB offense returns 10 starters in 2018, which is tied for the most in the nation with Florida and Michigan State. Brown will run behind a veteran offensive line that returns four starters and a fifth in Rishard Cook who made four starts a year ago.
Β
Brown is one of 85 players on the list and just one of four players in Conference USA to be honored, along with Devin Singletary (FAU), Brent Stockstill (Middle Tennessee) and Mason Fine (North Texas).
Β
The Blazers are 45 days away from taking the field for the start of the 2018 season, which kicks off on Thursday night, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. against Savannah State at Legion Field.
Β
Season tickets are on sale starting as low as $99, while family packages, mini packs and group tickets are available as well. Click here for your best option to purchase tickets.
