BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UAB bowling team will have a large representation on the national stage this week as eight Blazers will converge on Dallas, Texas, to compete in the 2018 Junior Gold Championships.
Representing the Green and Gold in the competition is NTCA Honorable Mention All-American Taylor Russell, Caitlin Cunningham, Sierra Lewis, Cayla Davidson and Morgan Mullinax. Newcomers Hallie Herring, Jamie Krasnigor and Katie Hurley will also compete in the event.
"The Junior Gold Championships is the largest youth tournament of the year," head coach Michelle Crews said. "It has grown tremendously since the last time I competed in it in 2009. To continually have a large presence of Blazers in the field is very exciting. The girls have been working so hard preparing for the event. For Taylor, Caitlin and Sierra, this is their last time competing and I'm excited to see them end their youth career with a bang. The girls can learn so much from this event that will provide us with valuable information as we prepare for the upcoming season."
The annual tournament showcases bowlers from across the country who will compete for a chance to bowl on the Junior Team USA. The tournament has three divisions for the female group – U12 Girls, U15 Girls and U20 girls.
At last year's championships, Russell, Cunningham and Elise London made the first cut before Russell posted the Blazers' finish at the event by coming in 20th place overall. Russell has been extremely successful at Junior Golds, winning the title in the U15 age group in 2013.
Fans can follow the action on bowl.com, where a live-stream will run throughout the event until the field is cut down on the final day. The final round of competition will be run on a tape delay on the CBS Sports Network.
