UAB Runs Into The Conference USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Coming off two strong meets to close out the season, the UAB track and field team is riding that momentum into the Conference USA Championships this weekend in Houston, Texas.
The championships get started on Thursday, May 10, at the Wendel D. Ley Track hosted by Rice University. The heptathlon kicks off the meet at 2:45 p.m. on Thursday. The field events and distance races dominate the day on Friday, May 11, with the hammer throw beginning the day at 2 p.m.
On Saturday, May 13, the men's discus and women's long jump start the day at 3 p.m. and the women's 4x400-meter relay ends the day and the championships at 9 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday's running events will be streamed on CUSA.tv beginning on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 6 p.m.
What to Watch
- The Blazers finished their last two meets with a combined 18 personal bests and 10 finishes within the top-10.
- Ali Cichos has been strong in the heptathlon and in the 100-meter hurdles all season long and looks to score this weekend.
- Brittany Floyd is also another heptathlete to watch for as she as come on strong at the end of the season. Floyd finished 10th at Auburn in the heptathlon but has placed in the top-10 in several individual heptathlon events throughout the season.
- Rebecca Evans finished 2nd in the 1500-meters at the Crimson Invite and is a threat to make the finals at the conference meet this weekend.
- The 4x400-meter relay team has run well during the outdoor season with two top-10 finishes and finished 8th at the C-USA Indoor Championships earlier this season.
- Shelbi White has run several strong 100-meter races with four top-10 finishes in the event. White is coming off a third place finish at the Duke Invitational.
- The 4x100-meter relay team finished first at the South Alabama Jaguar Classic earlier this season and has run well historically for UAB at the conference meet.

"We had back-to-back great weekends at Auburn and Duke and we need those athletes to show up this weekend," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "If they do, it could be a very good weekend for us. Everyone is fresh as we have taken a couple weeks off for finals, and they are ready to go."
